If you’re reading this, we can assume that you are into beauty and grooming and have a penchant for all things culturally conscious. Just like us – hey, girl! So, naturally, you already know that there is a lot of BS floating about the internet. Yes, it gave us global connection, but it also paved the way for social media, and with it came a whole new host of problems.

Say what you will about meeting like-minded individuals and allowing brands to connect with their followers instantaneously, platforms like TikTok and Instagram are harnessing more bad than good in our eyes, and we want to make sure our growing network and community has the tools they need to safely swipe to their heart's content. Intrigued? Thought so.

Here are some handy digital self-care tips to protect you from the post-beauty-filter world we live in…

Abandon the BS narrative that consuming social media = staying informed

You are a business owner, a Mum, a creative — whatever your case may be — before you are a social media consumer. Constantly checking your phone and refreshing your feeds makes you an addict. If you want to stay informed, look for long-form content from reputable publications, podcasts or books.

When you're overwhelmed by your timeline, take a break

Social media can sometimes feel like a numbers game, but at the end of the day it's a tool we use to communicate. Do not take social media validation as a sign of your value, worth or contribution to society — it’s all fake anyway, babe

Unfollow accounts that don't bring you joy

Perhaps an #OBVS suggestion, but trust, it’s worth spending the time to go through and cull those platforms and influencers posting #FAKENEWS

Turn off push notifications

Again, #OBVS, but perhaps this one is so simple, we forget to do it… By turning off these little distractions, we’re not sucked back into the news cycle. And, it also reduces the emotional toll of hearing – or seeing – every little update.

Set digital boundaries

Limit how much and when you use your phone. Why not try and make a rule that when you’re having a face-to-face conversation, you don’t check your phone. Alternatively, if you like to get all techy about it, you can set app usage limits.

Look for the good (and notice the bad)

Taking the time to realise the good around us is incredibly helpful in overcoming stressful sensations from social media. And remember to look for #AD to determine whether you want to trust what/who you're looking at

Detox, digitally

No one will miss you if you go offline for a few days – and that's a good thing. Tech-free days are becoming increasingly popular ways to check in with yourself and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life. And if you’re feeling fancy, book into a sumptuous retreat while you temporarily give up your device.
