1. Prepare your skin with warm water and a blob of face wash to soften the bristles because let’s face it, you’re about to drag a piece of sharp metal across it. Shaving after showering is always a smart idea as the steam opens up the pores nicely.
2. Protect your face with a layer of shaving gel, foam, or oil to help the razor blade glide across your skin like a Swiss slalom skier in the Winter Olympics. Avoid products with too much fragrance as they may inflame the skin.
3. Shave in the direction of hair growth to avoid the dreaded razor burn – those angry red spots that can become infected later. Change your blade after about four shaves to prevent bacteria transmitting to your skin.
4. Shave complete, your skin should now feel as smooth as a nectarine plucked straight from the tree – but the job isn’t finished yet. Splash cold water on your face to close the pores and calm down any redness.
5. Gently apply a cooling post-shave balm to reduce inflammation and give your thirsty skin a welcome drink. For goodness’ sake, don’t splash eau de toilette on your freshly-shaven face as the alcohol will not only dry your skin but also very possibly make you scream in pain.
6. Last step, use a gentle moisturiser to replenish and hydrate the skin before you face the world looking fresh as a daisy.
