All-natural deodorants have been popping up in the industry at a much higher rate recently. Thankfully! Those commercial deodorants you can find at your local supermarket, contain excessive amounts of chemicals – the most active substance being aluminum chlorohydrate, an incredibly energy intensive substance to produce. No wonder alternatives with more biotic ingredients are better for both people and planet.
If environmental ethics is your thing, then there’s no way you should be reaching for that antiperspirant after the shower, even if it stops you sweating in the first place. For example: aluminium is the main component of that popular gland-plugging compound, aluminum-chlorohydrate, and the process for extracting this light metal involves open pit mining. Think interrupted landscapes and disrupted vegetation. To actually extract the aluminium ore, an insane amount of energy and electricity is required, so even though aluminium-based items are recyclable, they are in no way environmentally friendly.
Just like most chemical-based products, the ingredients are synthetised in labs – this process itself uses copious amounts of resources and non-biodegradable waste products. Thankfully brands and products that favour plant-based ingredients tend to also favour zero-waste mentalities, therefore a vegan, cruelty-free or organic deodorant is always going to win in our books. Many even offer refill subscriptions to really lower the effect on the planet.
As well as being bad for the environment, studies have increasingly shown that using chemical-based antiperspirants is bad for your health. Makes sense that rolling harsh chemicals on the sensitive skin of the underarms will raise several health concerns – duh. Many commercial antiperspirants contain chemicals such as triclosan which has been linked to endocrine disruption and propylene-glycol which studies have shown to trigger allergic reactions and lead to skin irritation.
So, even though we chose to live that #DESERTLIFE, sweating is entirely natural process of the body. No shame girl, it’s hot.
When you use an antiperspirant and prevent sweating, it leaves you more likely to overheat and more prone to dry skin. No thanks. We’ll take our fresh-smelling, culturally conscious deodorant over that spray any day.
We’re currently using Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant daily.
