There comes a time, in every vagina’s life, when they will have to endure an oh-so-lovely – not – yeast infection: a condition that makes the area itchy and causes thick, white, vaginal discharge. If you and your vagina are lucky enough to have missed out on this condition, be warned: up to three out of four people with vulvas will get a yeast infection at some point in their life, and most will get more than one. Basically, we’re all screwed.
Don’t fret, however, as there are many, many reasons why your vagina could be itchy and producing a weird-looking discharge in your underwear. And if it is a yeast infection, it's usually pretty easy to treat – you just better deal with it ASAP. Firstly, we recommend going to see a gynecologist if you think something might be wrong. Secondly, do not consult Dr. Google: the internet is not a doctor, and apple cider vinegar baths, douches and soaked tampons are not treatments – looking at you, misleading TikTok. There is always the small chance that your symptoms could be indicative of a more serious medical condition, like an STI or even diabetes, so it’s always best to seek a professional opinion.
These infections are caused by an excess of a yeast called candida albicans that lives in your vagina – there's always an amount of yeast and bacteria working in perfect harmony down there, but when something tampers with those amounts, your vagina makes more yeast to overcompensate, and the rest is, well, you know, a rather itchy affair.
How do you get rid of a yeast infection, you ask? Well, while you're treating a yeast infection you should try to create the healthiest environment possible for your vagina to breathe. Something you should be doing on the reg, actually. We suggest wearing cotton underwear instead of nylon to keep your vaginal area dry. Don't douche or use any soaps or feminine hygiene products, because they can remove the healthy bacteria that your vagina needs to keep everything balanced.
So, if you keep getting unwanted discharge and itchiness, take a look at these reasons why your yeasty infection keeps popping up to say hello… And then make that GYNO appointment.
